Within Your Reach

W

Did your candidates win?

As I type, it’s Monday before the election, so I can’t know who the new President is. Whoever it is, I’m sure laws will change, policies will change, the economy will change, religious freedoms will change, and our country’s relationship with the world will change.

But there are changes no elected official can make—changes more important to human thriving than most anything an elected official can bring about.

This is where you come in.

No matter what political party, no matter what elected office, no matter how powerful or how popular, Washington cannot…

…love the unloveable.

…turn fathers’ hearts toward their children.

…forgive sin.

…cleanse a soul of guilt and shame.

…turn a heart of stone into a heart of flesh.

…lift someone’s head by putting them into a family.

…heal the brokenhearted.

…give someone an eternal identity.

…make the dead to live again.

These, and so much more, are the work of God, and so subsequently the work of His people. And that doesn’t change no matter who is in office.

Where are you today? At work with coworkers? At home with your kids? In the hospital? In a classroom? Look around you. Who do you see? These lives are within your reach more than the President’s. And, if you’re willing, what you can bring is of greater value than anything the President ever could.

Where do we begin? Perhaps with something like this:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19, 20).

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma” (Ephesians 5:1, 2).

“But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you” (Luke 6:27, 28).

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near.” (Philippians 4:4).

“[Let] us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1, 2).

I’d love to hear from you. What’s one verse you can remember today that reminds you of whose what you can do? Leave it in a comment below.

For Christ’s Kingdom,
Josh

  • One of my favorite verses: “Can a mother forget th baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has born? Though she may forget, I will not forget you. See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands, and your walls are ever before me. (Isaiah 49:15-16). Oh how good to know in troubled times…or any time! God will always have us in mind because His love for us is so strong. Thank you for this powerful reminder! Our sovereign God died for us and in Him we have new life every day!

  • This was a beautiful reminder of the one true godly perspective. Thank you for lifting us all up with it. Our priest reminded us last Sunday whoever gets elected, God is still on the throne! Hebrews 8:1 Now the main point of what we have to say is this: we have such a High Priest, the Christ who is seated in the place of honor at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty God in heaven,
